On Vanishing Point by Marcia Muller
Hardback ISBN: 0892968052
Mysterious Press
Laurel's, now grown daughter, still ill at ease with the events that took place around the time of her mother's disappearance elicits the help of Sharon through a mutual friend. Can Sharon help ease the mind of this woman who carried hurt and anger with her all these years? With no physical evidence and few people to interview, the case is reopened and detective McCone begins to pour over new leads while uncovering disturbing secrets about Laurel and her family life. The shocking conclusion has the potential to bring a family closer or tear it apart forever.
Muller does a solid job of working the proper amount of action and excellent detective work into the story, but this is not its only merit. Vanishing Point is a very intriguing story that vividly portrays the gamut of emotions that are felt by a victim's family and friends, especially in cases where there is no resolution or information about the disappearance of their loved one. There is a clear sense of the upheaval of life and strained relationships in those that are left behind. This was definitely a job suited for detective McCone who although tough under fire, has a sensitive nature about her that adds another dimension to the book..
