The Silent Land by Graham Joyce
ISBN: 978-0-385-53380-5
Maybe it's because I hadn't had the privilege of reading any of Graham Joyce's previous works, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a book this is. At one point, I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. The book actually made me cry. It's not that I am a hardened person who never sheds a tear, but I don't typically cry while reading. It makes everything fuzzy.
The Silent Land is a story of two people in love, who have been together for years. They've faced hardships together and their bond is all the stronger because of that. Their bond is so strong, in fact, that even death will not pry them apart without permission.
While on vacation at a ski resort, Zoe plans to tell her husband that she is carrying their child. However, when things take a bizarre turn, Zoe puts off telling Jake until just before it would be too late. After an avalanche buries Zoe alive, she manages to get out, with the help of her beloved, who, it turns out, will not live to see another day. This is a bit of a love story written in a way as to add an element of suspense, although the author teases us with suggestive symbolism throughout.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever been in love and likes a good mystery.
As far as I can see, there is nothing but good to be said about this book. It was a real treat being taken into another dimension for a while. I'm off to buy another book by Graham Joyce.
