If one were
asked to sum up The Serial Killers Club in one word it would have to be
clever with a capital “C”. We get a glimpse into the dynamics of a wonderfully
crazy group of individuals who all have the hobby of killing in common. The
lead character “Dougie” draws us into the story as, seeking acceptance by a
group, he unknowingly joins a club of murderers by assuming the identity of a
famous serial killer who he killed in self defense. After the initial shock
and unsavory experience of his first meeting with the group, Dougie soon feels
at home with his companions and looks forward to their meetings. You could
say, he would kill to remain part of the group. It isn’t until he is
confronted by a federal agent who has evidence against him, that Dougie has
some tough decisions to make...foremost….kill the rest of the “club” or face
the death penalty himself.
Written as a dark comedy, The
Serial Killers Club, contains some very gruesome scenes that are made
quite palatable by the comic relief that is never too far ahead in the story.
Povey does an excellent job of fleshing out the characters and making them
“real” to the reader. There is even a touch of romance in the air as
Dougie seemingly falls in love with a fellow club member. We see the
vulnerable side of some of the more unsavory people society has to offer and
their overriding need to “belong” somewhere.
