Chocolate for the Poor

In Chocolate for the Poor by David Beasley, we're transported to another place and time where life was hard and the perception of family was much different than it is today.  Through his gift for empathy and insight into the human heart, along with his apparent knowledge of the era, Beasley creates characters who walk with us on the dirt roads of 1805.

Eugene Wheeler comes to us a brutal man who's treatment of his family would be difficult for many to forgive.  Time and time again, he savagely abuses his wife without punishment.  He is relentless, angry and unforgiving.  One day, out of anger and hate for his wife, he rapes his 13 year old daughter, Betsy, in the woods.

Back in a time with no DNA evidence, it's her word against his.  Although Betsy seems credible, not everyone will believe her and her case against her father is difficult to prove.  After the verdict is read by a less than desirable jury, Eugene Wheeler's fate is thrown into the hands of politicians and lawmakers with their own personal agendas.  Will Eugene Wheeler hang for what he's done?  What will become of his family?

The conflict in Chocolate for the Poor is not whether a crime was committed, but rather the severity of the crime as seen by the laws of the time, and the political repercussions of capital punishment against the common man.

Analytical thinkers and those who enjoy courtroom drama will appreciate this novel for it's examination and debate of early 19th century law, while others will be drawn to it for the dramatic portrayal of a family torn apart by an unimaginable crime.

Additional comments: "Chocolate for the Poor" refers to a root which was tasty and commonly harvested.
