On Map of Bones by James Rollins
Paperback ISBN: 0060765240
In the spirit of “Da Vinci Code” and the big-screen hit “National Treasure”, Map of Bones is a high energy tale woven from the fabric of historical fact and current scientific research. James Rollins leads us on a deadly trail of clues, left by a secret society with roots in antiquity, that point to the most unfathomable prize that this world can offer….the possession of which could change the course of humanity. We are also introduced to the Sigma Force, a group of U.S. military personnel specially trained in science, working under auspices of the Defense Department who are commissioned to investigate weapons and technologies that pose a threat to national security.
What begins as an unlikely alliance between Sigma Force, a Vatican official and his policewoman niece, quickly evolves into a dynamic partnership as the investigation of a forcible and bloody theft of relics (bones of the magi) from a German cathedral reveals a mysterious white powder and sets the stage for a struggle to unlock its secrets. If this isn't enough, the group behind the theft and one-step ahead of the team is a rogue faction of a society bent on dominating the world.
A major allure of the book is the way in which Rollins is able to account for a large number of seemingly non-related historical accounts and ancient writings and tie them neatly into a coherent and plausible story. The action is fast-paced with plenty of plot turns and double agents to go around.
