If you have ever wondered what life was like in the Ice Age or wanted to go back in time, you should read Mammoth by John Varley.

This book has a little of everything. The characters are real people like you and me who one day are sipping lattes at Starbucks and the next day, standing over the prehistoric frozen corpse of a Mammoth with what looks to be two people huddled underneath it! Is one wearing a wristwatch? Mammoth is an incredible story that brings prehistoric creatures into modern day life in a twist of time and fate.

This is a wonderfully written and remarkable tale that you will want to pass on to friends. While the language is not elementary, it is also not overly flowery and there is not much vulgarity at all. Because of this, I would recommend this book for anyone age 12 and up.
